Many great musicians began by teaching themselves. Sir Paul McCartney once said “I always thought the secret of The Beatles was that our music was self-taught.There's a certain magic about that.”

20th century music was so incredible because musicians were using their own experiences and experiments. Through learning their favourite songs and experimenting with their own ideas, they let themselves uncover what hidden talents lay beneath their fingertips by listening and breaking down what they loved.

Handcraft Music will be following these natural progressions, to focus on personalising goals for each student using your favourite music.

Based in Central Auckland, Handcraft Music grew out of a passion for music and the intimate details involved in songwriting and arrangements across a variety of genres. From Lennon/McCartney’s pop music revolution that affected all of popular culture (even fashion), Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins’ incredibly innovative, fiery, and humorous takes on country music, to AC/DC’s thunderous and rebellious heavy rock sound particularly through the Young brothers and their Marshall amps.

We are self-taught at Handcraft Music, beginning our journey with bass, then on to the guitar, we have nearly 20 years of experience to rely on. Choosing to learn our favourite songs, we have tallied a range of skills without formal lessons or learning music theory. Attempts were made at music theory and formal lessons yet what worked best was focusing on what we love.

To us, this is pure evidence that anybody can learn how to play guitar. This is what Handcraft Music can use to help improve the music community around Auckland.
